Larry O’Deane Helton, lovingly known to many as “Homer,” passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, in Kiln, Mississippi. Born on August 11, 1937, in Elmer, Missouri, Larry’s life was characterized by dedication to family, quiet strength, and lasting friendships.
Larry was the cherished son of the late Archie Helton and Effie Mae Helton. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Cathy Jean Helton Speeks, and brothers, Eugene Helton and Jewell Kenneth Helton. These family bonds remained dear to Larry’s heart throughout his life.
Left to honor Larry’s memory are his devoted granddaughters, Maggie Speeks and Kerri Speeks and his treasured companion, Cindy Schoonmaker. His legacy will continue in the life of his great-granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Speeks, and through the loving support of his son-in-law, Danny Speeks and his sister-in-law, Patricia Helton and his life long friends, Bob Matheryn and Candice Kemp.
Larry proudly served 20 years in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller, finishing his career a chief controller (E-7) after serving at various naval air stations around the world. Upon his retirement from the Navy he continued to serve his country as a controller with the FAA. Larry was a true patriot.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate Larry’s life and legacy on July 27, 2026. A visitation will be held at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home, 110 S. Necaise Ave, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at the same location at 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery, 400 Veterans Ave, Biloxi, MS 39531, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Larry O’Deane Helton’s presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a heritage of steadfast support, kindness, and lasting love—qualities that will remain with his family and friends always.
