John Jerome Maples, of Waveland, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the age of 71.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 5, 1955, John lived a life that took him from his hometown across much of the country. He proudly served in the United States Navy. Following his military service, John worked in several different occupations, each adding to the many experiences, places, and people that became part of his story.
In the New Orleans area, he worked as a taxi driver alongside his best friend, the late Robbie Koch. He later moved to Hammond, Louisiana, where he bought a campground and worked to reopen and rebuild the KOA. After selling the campground, John went into trucking, a career that allowed him to travel throughout the continental United States and experience many different parts of the country.
John enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends. Those who knew him will remember the stories, friendships, and many journeys he shared throughout his life.
John is survived by his son, Johnny Maples; his daughter, Katie Green (Will); and Cody Dufrene, who was like a son to him. He is also survived by his former wife and the mother of his children, Liz M. Maples.
He is also survived by his siblings, Daniel Maples (Liz), Michael Maples (Julie), Pat Koch (Steve), and Mary Maples.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ursula Maples; his younger sister, Maurine Maples; and his sister-in-law, JoAnn Maples.
