Gladys Sbisa Stakelum

Mobile, Alabama
A native of New Orleans, she was a longtime resident of Bay St. Louis and Waveland, Mississippi, and a devout member of St. Clare Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Gladys Sbisa, her husband, Ivo Stakelum, and granddaughter, Kelsey Williams.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her five children: Sharon (Robert) Francis, Maureen (Odie) Van Devender, Kathleen (Jay) Williams, Brian (Sally) Stakelum, and Sean (Laurie) Stakelum, eight grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
Gladys was a star athlete in her youth, playing on several championship varsity volleyball and basketball teams. She was a proud alumna of Holy Name High School in New Orleans and Loyola University. A dedicated wife and mother, Gladys was endlessly energetic and actively engaged in school events. Over numerous summers, she taught swimming lessons at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis. In her later years, Gladys spent time developing her artistic talents and eventually channeled her warm, welcoming nature into a role as a greeter, first at Walmart and then at Froogals, until the age of 85. She received endless joy from greeting and visiting with customers who quickly became friends. She moved to senior independent living at Somerby Mobile in Mobile, Alabama, where she lived for two years. She cherished her time there, the wonderful people she met, and the friendships she formed.
Services will be held at St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland, Mississippi on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Visitation from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 pm. Interment will be in Waveland Cemetery.
