Emile Louis Mattei Jr., a devoted family man, proud Marine veteran, innovative entrepreneur, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 3, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on May 7, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital (the name of the hospital at that time), he grew up on Verbena Street in Gentilly (named for the beautiful flower) and was the son of Emile Mattei Sr. and Elna Mattei. He was a longtime resident of Kiln, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eddie Mattei, his wife Jeanette Mattei, and many other cherished family members and friends.

Emile is survived by the mother of his children, Katherine Mattei Ballinger; his children Emile Mattei and his wife Tammy Mattei, Teresa Mattei Davison and her husband Ken Davison, Karen Mattei, Sheila Mattei Fedrowisch and her husband Curtis Fedrowisch, and Elaine Mattei Jarrell; his grandchildren Denver and Bre LaGard, Stephanie and Colton Petrea, Brittany and Rusty Davis, Richard Fayard, Karen K. Davison, Jonathan Brannon, Tim Stephens, Anthony and Alesia Page, and Michael Jarrell; his great-grandchildren Brittlynn Davis, Russell Davis, Ezra Davis, Landen Petrea, Emory Petrea, Nora LaGard, Sera Brannon, Olivia Lucille Page, Gabriel Louis Page, Jullian James Page, and Emily Nele Page; and his lifelong friend Yvonne Rosa. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Sweetheart.

Emile served with great pride in the United States Marine Corps. He often shared stories from his time in the service, including his time in Japan, where he thoughtfully selected a beautiful set of china for his mother. He saved every dinner ticket from his Marine days for nearly 90 years—a testament to how deeply he cherished that chapter of his life. He was also very proud of his 50 years as a member of the Ionic Lodge and of achieving the 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

As a young man, he worked at the iconic Pontchartrain Beach amusement park on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, helping paint the frames of its famous wooden roller coasters during the park’s heyday. He later enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with ODECO (Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company), a pioneering New Orleans-based offshore drilling contractor founded in 1953 that helped shape the modern industry through groundbreaking submersible and semi-submersible rig designs. Emile thrived there and was known for his own inventive contributions that improved communication systems on the oil rigs.

One of Emile’s greatest sources of pride was his ability to start and operate his own businesses. He created the Family Skate Center, giving his children and countless others a safe, joyful place to grow up. There were two locations: one in Gentilly at the old Peacock Theatre on Clematis, and a second that he built himself in Slidell. Emile loved children and poured his heart into being a positive influence in their lives. He worked hard to ensure every child who came through his doors felt safe and welcomed. While he could be firm when needed, his intentions were always rooted in care and the desire for others to do their best.

As a father, Emile was extraordinary. He built incredible toys and play structures for his children, including a large metal spool that he painted in bright colors. While living at Lake Catherine, his kids could stand inside it, walk, and make it move like a giant rolling toy. He also built a massive swingset and an oversized seesaw. The swingset still stands in his yard today as a lasting reminder of his love and creativity. He took the time to truly know each of his children, studying their personalities and making special moments—like Valentine’s Day hearts—feel magical.

Emile was an exceptional storyteller who loved sharing (and repeating) his favorite stories. He had a great sense of humor, quick wit, and the ability to make anyone laugh. Everyone who knew him loved him; he was simply that kind of man.
