Former Mayor Charles Michael Smith (“Papa”)
In loving memory of the Former Mayor Charles Michael Smith, also known as “Mike” or “Papa”, of Waveland, Mississippi, who passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the age of 62.
Born on September 23, 1963, in Gulfport, Mississippi, Mike was the son of Charles and Belinda Smith. He was a proud graduate of Bay High School. From a young age, Mike had a strong sense of duty to his community, which led him to dedicate his career to public service.
He began as a firefighter and worked his way up to Fire Chief and later Mayor of Waveland, serving from 2015 to 2022. During his time as Mayor, Mike was deeply committed to rebuilding the city following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Among his proudest accomplishments were the construction of the Waveland Lighthouse and Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Both lasting symbols of the city’s resilience and community spirit. He also brought new life and charm to Coleman Avenue by helping establish the Art Gallery and Sugar Pop Bakery, places that reflected his love for the community, its creativity, and small businesses. His passion and dedication left a permanent mark on the city he loved so dearly.
Outside of his service to the community, Mike found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved playing darts with friends, fishing, taking boat rides, watching football games, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his humor, his generosity, and the countless ways he showed up for others.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Belinda Smith; his brother, Tobby Smith; and his son Joshua Samuel Smith.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Melanie Smith; sons, Noah Smith and Charles Michael Smith Jr.; grandchildren, Bradley Trace (Sierra) Hart and David Goleman; great-granddaughter, Adley Grey; and siblings, Melissa (Andrew) Ruhr, Rance (Brandi) Smith. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved pets, Bella, Mookie, and Beau.
A celebration of life and memorial service will be held in Mike’s honor at a later date, alongside the dedication of the Waveland Fire Station on Coleman Avenue, which will be named in his honor. This special event will be open to everyone, as family, friends, and the community gather to celebrate the incredible life and legacy of a man who gave so much of himself to the city he loved. Details will be shared once the arrangements are finalized.
Mike’s legacy is one of heart and service, a legacy built on love for his community, devotion to his family, and pride in the city he helped rebuild. His laughter, strength, and compassion will echo through Waveland for generations to come. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the people he inspired, the places he helped create, and the love he leaves behind. His light will forever shine over the city he called home.
For those who wish to honor Mike’s memory through a contribution, a GoFundMe has been created to support his wife Melaine and family during this difficult time. Contributions, kind words, and memories may be shared at: https://gofund.me/a4b3c3c6f
