Andrew Scafidi, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and resident of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 16, 2025. He was 90 years old.
Born on March 12, 1935, in Bay St. Louis, Andrew was the son of the late Joseph Joseph Scafidi, Sr., and Bernice Weinberg. He graduated from Saint Stanislaus College in 1952 and earned an associate degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1954. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Augusta, Georgia, for three years before returning home in 1957.
On December 28, 1953, Andrew married Eugenie “Gene” Aime Scafidi. Together, they shared over 71 years of marriage, raising a loving family and building a life full of faith, devotion, and hard work.
Andrew and his family lived in Little Farms, Louisiana, from 1958 until 1970, after which they returned to Bay St. Louis. In 1970, he purchased the STAR Theatre on Beach Boulevard from his father. He and his family owned and operated the movie theater for five years. Throughout his life, Andrew worked in many roles — including raising rabbits and earthworms — and retired in 1994 after holding many positions at the DuPont chemical plant in Delisle, Mississippi. He always demonstrated a tireless work ethic and a willingness to do whatever was needed to support his family.
A devout Catholic, Andrew was a dedicated member of Saint Clare Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. He was a man of deep faith, quiet strength, and steady patience. He gave of himself generously and always placed the needs of others before his own.
Andrew’s greatest passions were his faith, his family, and the game of golf. Golf brought him immense joy — from playing the game to serving as a marshal at the Zurich Classic and attending the Masters. It was a source of both recreation and reflection in his later years.
He is survived by his wife, Gene Scafidi; his five children and their spouses: Anne Krankey (Marvin Sr.), Susan Nickell (Nick), Rhea Rutherford (Dennis), Aimee Thompson (Rodney), and Andrew Scafidi, Jr. (Marilyn); his beloved siblings: Mary Lou Mutter (late Ben), Alvin Scafidi (Anita), Carlo Scafidi (JoAnne) and Terry Paul Scafidi (late Margaret).
Andrew was the cherished grandfather of Kim Krankey LaFontaine (late Chad), Hope Krankey Furr (Claude), Marvin “MJ” Krankey, Jr. (Ashley), Frank Penton, Jr. (Nazli), Nicole Penton, Joseph Scafidi (Mandy), Lynn Rutherford (PJ), Elizabeth “Betsee” Garcia (Jason), Emily Lamb (Bobby), Elysha Cuevas (John), and Jennifer Gunter (Shane).
He was also a proud great-grandfather to Drew LaFontaine (Hanna), Bailey Miller (Christian), Jacob LaFontaine, Shelby Furr, Kolby Furr, Ashley Stanfield, Nicholas Turcotte, Lucille Turcotte, Hannah Bingham, Caleb Boswell, Cash Scafidi, Natalie Garcia, Kate Garcia, Lily Garcia, Dylan Lamb, Addison Lamb, Cooper Lamb, Eva Cuevas, Eastin Cuevas, Viktor Gunter, and Ayame Gunter. In addition, he was the great-great-grandfather of Micah Chad Miller and Hazel Elizabeth LaFontaine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Joseph Scafidi, Jr. (late Alice); his son-in-law Frank Penton, Sr.; and his grandson-in-law Chad LaFontaine.
Andrew leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, humility, and devotion. His kindness, wisdom, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
